Differentiating between online learning and distance learning is crucial, as both provide remote education but cater to varying needs and learning styles through distinct approaches.
Online learning and distance learning differ significantly in several aspects. Online learning, or eLearning, typically occurs in a blended format where instructors and students interact in a traditional classroom setting enhanced by digital tools. In contrast, distance learning involves a complete separation of instructors and students, relying solely on digital platforms for instruction, often with little to no in-person interaction (iCEV & iCEV, n.d.). The intention behind online learning is usually to supplement traditional teaching, while distance learning is implemented when remote instruction is necessary due to circumstances like geographical distance, scheduling conflicts, or health issues (iCEV & iCEV, n.d.). Instructional methods vary as well; online learning incorporates interactive multimedia and real-time assessments, whereas distance learning focuses on digital content and virtual communication tools (Leonard, 2025).
